A Hopeful Mission: Libraries in a Complex World

When I contemplate a higher purpose, I gravitate toward a mission filled with hope. Our world is marked by an array of interconnected and seemingly insurmountable challenges, from climate change and globalization to social and economic disparities, as well as crises in public health, water and agriculture, transportation, and energy. Not to mention the transformative impact of AI and other emerging technologies.

These are all intricate, dynamic, and, in many ways, intractable issues, but I view them through the lens of information. They are, fundamentally, information problems. And what these complex, interrelated challenges demand are new ways of thinking, sharing, working, and collaborating.

I firmly believe that libraries are essential for progress in this uncertain future. They stand as vital connectors, committed conveners, community developers, and creative catalysts. Libraries fulfill an important role in navigating the intricate issues we all face.

While this mindset continues to evolve for me, I feel an unwavering sense of responsibility to work toward making a meaningful impact. It is a mission that resonates with hope, purpose, and a commitment to a more connected and cooperative world. Iā€™m actively looking for climate change initiates and for researchers working to address global challenges.
